After using most monitoring tools for two decades, I highly recommend Zabbix. Zabbix homepage

It is powerful and easy to install and manage. (and opensource of course)

It provides the features of Nagios (Pure live status monitoring and alerts) and Cacti (Keeping record of values and graphing) in one application, AND ... much more, such as:

  • automated actions
  • templates to auto-magically monitor different kind of equipments
  • GUI user tailored graphs (line/bar/pie/stack) where you can combine any values from any host.
  • the ability to zoom in graphs (see data for a selected period)
  • unlimited number of tailored "screens" that show your manager his favourites graphs, alerts (and more) on one web page.
  • the ability to quite simply add your own monitored items

I.E. I had to keep trace of a non standard temperature sensor in one linux gear and provide alerts, it was quickly done in 3 steps:

  1. I added to the agent config file: UserParameter=sensor.heat[*],sudo /sbin/hplog -t | grep '$1' | cut -d '/' -f 2 | cut -d 'C' -f 1
  2. I added via the management GUI to sample "sensor.heat[*]" on this server
  3. I added a trigger via the management GUI.

Voila.

  • And much much more, that can't be mentioned in the scope of this wiki entry.

Take a look at the screenshoots, it's worth the installation and getting used to configure it, You will love it.
